Motorcycle Repair: I need help with older honda, vf750 magna, honda vf750

Question
Hi, my name is Charlie and I recently purchased a 1982 Honda VF750 Magna motorcycle for $500.  Not a bad deal, but I am now having a problem with it.  Basically, the fuel tank is rusting/corroding on the inside and the impurities are getting into the fuel sys.  I replaced the fuel filter and it was completely black!  Now the carb is not getting fuel and the motor is not turning over as fast as it should (full batt. charge and jump off car too!). Is there a way to tell if the impurities made it to the carbs or if it is just the fuel pump...the pump is clicking and whirring...it used to be silent.  Or maybe something I haven't thought of.  Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Charlie.
 Your carbs have been contaminated by the rust.  Here's what you need to do;

1) Drain the fuel from both the main tank and the little reserve tank under the seat.

2) Pull and reseal them both.  A good bike shop will have the resealer, which is simple to use.

3) Pull and clean the carbs.

4) Pull the fuel pump and flush it out with clean fuel.

5) DO NOT reuse the old fuel unless you filer it into the tank with an aviation grade filtered fuel funnel.  If you want to get one, any aviation supply store at your local executive or municipal airport will have one.  But they are like 10 bucks.

Good luck.
