Motorcycle Repair: front wheel whobbling, head nut, kickstand

Question
I ride my motorcycle and at around 20-30 miles an hour my front wheel whobbles hence my handlebars whobble as well. I have to keep my hands on the handlebars otherwise it whobbles even harder. When I go faster it smooths out. I had the wheels balanced and still the same problem. There are no visible dents in the wheel or bubbles in the tire. I have a 130 front tire. My bike is a 1987 softail. Any idea what the problem could be?

Answer
There are some different reasons for this problem. First check the tire for wear. Run your hand around the center. If it feels wavy it probably needs replaced. Even if you have it balanced it will still do it. I have seen many tires that look good, but cause a wobble.
Another reason is a bad bearing in the steering head. A way to test is lean the bike over on the kickstand so that the front tire is off the ground. Have a helper pull on the wheel inline with the frame of the bike. There should be no play. If there is then first check to see if the steering head nut is tight. If it is then you will need to check the bearings in the steering head.
Good luck and happy riding
