Motorcycle Repair: leaking cooling system, honda shadow 750, keyword search tool

Question
hi. just got an 1983 honda shadow 750. cranks right up all works good , sounds good but when you put water in radiator, it seeps from the pipes on both sides where pipe turns up in to heads, also on the pipe up by carbs, on top.
can i take these loose and fix, maybe o ring ? or do i send to a shop.  help?

                    thanks  art.

Answer
Hi Arthur,

Yes, you can remove those pipes and replace the o'rings. Use assembly grease on the new o'rings to aid in sealing.

To see microfiche parts on-line (and compare prices) visit: "www.bikebandit.com" Once the website opens, click "OEM Parts" and then select your MC from the menus that follow.

Check into a tool that purges air form the cooling system. MityVac makes the AirEvac tool. See it on-line by performing a keyword search. Tool is expensive, but necessary. Try renting from a local car parts store.

It is VERY important to purge air from the air free cooling system or it will not work properly. If you drain coolant or if coolant get too low, air is in the system. Knowing this and doing it properly is the difference between a mechanic and everybody else : )
