Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Heads, air fuel mixture, stock cams

Question
-------------------------Mark,
The only resource to this was a "knowledgeable" freind. He told me that on most Jap engines, (auto as well as bike), these "one way" bolts were being used. Thanks for your answer as well as the timley response.

I have a 2000 V-Star 650 Classic. I am thinking about having the heads ported and polished. I have recently heard about "one way" head bolts that will rip up the threading and need to be replaced if head work is done. I am wondering if the engine in my bike has this type of head bolt. Also is it reccommended to upgrade the cam when the heads are done? If so, to what? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Answer -
Hi Doc,

Cylinders slide down over cylinder studs and fastened by flanged nuts. Do you have a resource that I may investiagte this information?

Porting and polishing will enhance the engines efficiency and improve performace. Cam upgrades may be necessary if radical porting is done. If the work simply removes manufacturing casting marks and slight porting to match intake and exhaust ports, stock cams should be fine.

Read spark plugs to learn what air-fuel mixture tuning needs done, if any.

Answer
Thanks, Doc

The information is not true.

I've been a pro-tech for about 25 years and never seen this fastener.

Engines have to be made serviceable. To repair such damages as the one-way bolt may cause would cost more that the labor to remove a cylinder head.

Listen carefully to someone not a journeyman in any occupation. Continue to use your good judgement.
