Motorcycle Repair: flood, custom harley, fuel drain

Question
I'm curious as to what entails to get a harley that was in a flood up and running again; saw one online and just trying to see if it may be worth the effort if one can acquire it cheap enough. It is a 99 custom harley is all I know; probably a 1340?

Answer
I have always been a little learly about buying a bike that has been under water. First, how long was it under water? If it was under along time, or stood wet for along time, you are taking a chance of the bearings rusting or pitting. Now you are talking rebuilding the motor and trans, so you need to factor that in.
If it was a very short time you can drain the oil, flush with diesel fuel, drain and put in new oil. Run the bike until it warms up, around 20 minutes and change the oil. Look for water in the oil. Then I would change the oil again after around 100 miles and look for water in the oil again. Keep changing the oil until you see no water.
Good luck and happy riding
