Motorcycle Repair: kawasaki gpz500s, coolant level, mechanical seal

Question
hi mark, i own a kawasaki gpz500s (year 1996) parallel twin 500cc cylinder engine, in the usa ninja 500.over the last couple of months i've noticed a built up of condensation on the rhs engine cover (the glass where you check the oil level). firstly i took off this cover and found a white milky type substance on the glass. I cleaned it but this problem re-occurs every 5-6 weeks. there's a built up of condensation/white substance then it goes away only to come back again. i suspect it's a leak as i was told that water and oil mixes to produce this substance but the water level does not seem to be going down although it's difficult to check the coolant level as the fairing is in the way.any ideas? hope you can be of assistance.

thanks,
eamonn

Answer
Hi Eamonn,

Pressure test the cooling system. You have a leaky seal, o'ring, mechanical seal, or gasket. Just have to try and find the defective part.

Do you have the service/repair manual for your MC? If not, try and obtain a copy. I recommend Kawasaki's manual or at least Clymer's manual. Avoid other brands for lack of clairity and information. The manual will assist you with testing. It will pay for itself with the first home repair.

Try the pressure test and get back with me on the results. Use my email: mshively1@woh.rr.com
