Motorcycle Repair: sportster wont stay on when enricher is completely in., harley davidson model, orange county california

Hi,

  I have a 2001 XL883 sportster that only has about 644 miles on it.  As you can guess it has sat stored for a while. Anyway, The Motorcycle starts with no problem with the enricher out completely.  But when the motorcycle is warmed up and the enricher is closed half or all the way, the Motorcycle sputters off.  I have tried adjusting the idle via the adjustment screw but it still sputters out.  If I raise the idle speed when the enricher is closed, it sky rockets when the enricher is open.  The manual says it sould be about 2000 rpm when the enricher is fully out.  There isn't much in the shop manual about this subject except to adjust the idle.  I think I should mention that I live in Orange County, California not that high above sea level next to DisneyLand.  Also, the Battery is new and the spark plugs are in good condition.  If you can help me with this problem so I can fix it myself, or give me a rough estimate for how much it would cost to be fixed, I would appreciate it. Please let me know if you need anymore information.

Replace the low speed Idle jet from a #40 to a #45 and this wil add more fuel. Your bike is to lean That is why when you pull the enrichner out it adds fuel and the bike runs and when you push it in the bike starves for fuel. Jet is about 10.00               Johnny
