I laid my bike down about a month ago.  It stayed on the right side rashing into and cracking the starter clutch cover.  I replaced the cover and the gasket after draining the oil and then replaced the oil afterwards.  Now i got it started and for some reason i smell something that smells similar to plastic.  It's coming from the lower right side (where the starter clutch cover is located as with the crankcase) and was wondering if maybe it's burning some oil or something?!  So the main question is if when you change oil does it usually burn a little and go un noticed usually?  If not do you have any ideas of what it could be?  Thanks a lot and get back to me on this.  2004 Suzuki GSX-R 600  >800 miles ='/

Hi Nic,

There should be no oil buring following an oil change. If oil finds it way onto hot engine surfaces for whatever reason, it may put off an odor. You'll have to remove the lower and side panels and investigate.

Look for any obvious fluids or evidence that fluids have leaked. Look for evidence of burned or melted ABS plastic and rubber, etc...

If you suspect a oil leak, use Dr. Scholl's Foot Powder Spray on the suspected area. This product sprays on as a fine, white powder. Oil appears brown if leaks are present. Cleans off easily with paper towel.

ok well... the plastics aren't on in right now because the right one was so damaged.  So do you know if the smell of burning oil may smell similar to plastic?  Other then that i have no ideas of what the problem could be because i replaced the starter clutch cover and gasket and changed the oil.  I guess the only thing i can think of is that oil is on the outside of the engine parts and is burning so if you could let me know what oil smells similar to maybe i can distinguish it as that.

Answer
Nic,

Look for burned wiring & electrical connectors as source of odor. I think it's residule oil from your repair. Start the engine and warm it to operating temperatures daily. Investigate the pressence of odors.

It's impossible to diagnose odors without being present. I cannot think of how to describe the odor of burning oil.
