Motorcycle Repair: wheel alignment, wheel alignment, rear fender

Question
Mike:

Hope you had fun in Florida.  I have question on wheel alignment, I think my back tire on my custom is off center because of the spacing  between the fender and the tire.  On left side the fender is almost touching the tire, on the right side there is plenty of room.  That might explain why it has always pulled to the right and felt uneasy on tight corners.  Also I hear the belt drive is squeaking when I push it as if the belt is binding.  Should I take my bike to a shop to have this issue resolved or should I do it myself?  I have been researching on the web and I see infomration about aligning using string, straight edges to lasers, what do think?

Thanks...Roland

Answer
Had a great time. Road 3025 miles.
To align your wheel you need some string. Remove the rear fender and fuel tank. Go with the string from the center of the neck, all the way down the backbone of the frame. The rear tire should be centered to this. If not, they your spacing is wrong and is why your belt is probably making a noise. Make sure your rear axle is square to the frame too.
