dear chris perhaps you could offer advice reg
arding xj900f on starting engine runs on all 4
but ehen you open throttle it stutters then kicks back in on feeling exhausts nos 2&3 seem to be cooler than 1&4 could it be problem coil thanks

Hi Mick.
 As luck would have it, I did, a couple of years ago, have an '83 Yamaha XJ900RK, so I am quite familiar with the bike.

 You will need the YICS cutoff tool in order to check and adjust the synchro, but you could have a problem with the wiring for the ignition system.

 Start with the wiring.  Go through it, from power to spark plugs, with a meter and check for shorts hot grounds.  Then check the coils, both cold and after the bike has been warmed up.

You will need your repair manual for the bike to have the correct specs and testing proceedures.

Since you have the F model and I had the RK model, I do not want to give you the specs from my manual as they could end up being wrong for your bike.

After that, check the carbs for correct synchronization and fuel flow.
