Motorcycle Repair: Tachometer gear removal, kawasaki ltd, easi

Question
I purchased a 1981 750 Kawasaki LTD,, the tach didn't work so I checked out the cable. It was frozen then I found that the nut that holds in the gear had been tampered with (rounded off and all messed up) thats why the tach isn't working.. My question is how do I get this gear asy. out..I heated it some and it still didn't turn. any help?

Answer
Hi Wayne.
You may need to get a nut-splitter to get the nut off, then replace it.  If it is a bolt or screw, then you may have to drill it and use an easi-out to get it out.  Worst case, you may have to drill it out and retap it.  Once that is done, the rest is easy.  Just follow the directions in the repair manual at that point.

Before you try any of the more invasive ideas, try some rust breaker on it first.  Apply it and leave it overnight.  Then try to remove it.

Good luck.
