Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 650 Special, diesel mechanic, oil seals

Question
-Thanks Mark Yes there is a small 1/16" ridge of rubber on the seal and a recess in the housing, but the tolerance is so that on pushing the seal in to place the ridge gets cut off. On closer inspection I see some evidence that a Loctite type product has been used previously. Curious because the bike only has 34,000 kilometers on it and therefore this is possibly the first time the seal has been changed. The housing is in good shape with no damage. As I said the engine is in great condition with nothing butchered on it at all. Must admit I feel pretty stupid as Iv'e installed hundreds of seals with no problems.-
Thanks again Mark.

Hello Mark
I recently purchased a 650 special 1978 in immaculate condition, it had sat for almost 9 years. I went over pretty much everything and it runs great. I did have an oil leak at the clutch pushrod so I purchased a new Yamaha supplied seal which is exactly the same as the old one. I installead it put everything back together put new 20/50 oil in and started the engine only to find that the seal had popped out spewing oil everywhere. The old seal came out very easy and the new one went in easy, pretty much pushed it in. I am a gas and diesel Mechanic by trade and most times have had to drive seals in place. Is there some sort of adhesive that should be used to hold the seal in place. I would appreciate your help. While I am on the subject should I replace the brass bushing that the pushrod slides through ?
thanks again for your time and help.

Hi Brian,

The oil seals do not require adhesives. There may be a retaining ridge on the seal's engine side outter diameter, if any.

The ease of removal and installation is concerning. As you know, usually requires a bit more labor. : )

You'll have to check the Service Manual for service limits on the bushing. I recall bushings to wear well and last.

Brian,

When in doubt, fine technicians ask questions. I can appreciate that.

Good news! I found tech intel for replacing the clutch rod seal on the following website:
