Hi Chris

I have a 1988 XL250 (RFVC model) with a couple of dirty great cracks down in between the spark plug and the exhaust valves. This is apparently a common problem, which is why none of the wreckers have a replacement for me.

(I can get it welded for about NZ400, but my mileage may vary - I want this fixed properly)

The head for an XL200 (which I can easily get) looks like an identical casting, except there is more metal removed around the valves. Have you ever heard of anyone converting a 200 head to a 250 head?

Failing that, if I were to put a 200 head and barrel (the barrels are a different diameter) on my 250 bottom end, would the stroke, etc match up properly?

Failing that, would a new 200 engine fit in my 250 frame?

Many thanks,
Anton

Hi Anton.
It is very possible to have found a head that has been bored out, but if you are not 100% certain, then don't get it.  Get the correct one and use that.  If you use anything but that, then you may run into more headaches that it's worth.

Good luck.

Thank you Falcon about the first question.
What about the other two options?
Cheers,
Anton

Answer
Hi Anton.
Fitting a 200 head on there will likely require changing the piston or reboring the head to match the 250 piston.

As far as the engine swap; for most bikes, a swap like that will work.  The biggest concern is matching the mounting points.  As long as those are correct, then there should be no problem.

Good luck.
