Motorcycle Repair: 2005 Sportster coughing problem, stock pipes, lean condition

Question
I just bought a 2005 Sportster 883 custom from the local dealership. It was pre-owned and the previous owner removed the baffles from the stock pipes. Frequently, while reving the engine, it will "cough". I removed the air cleaner and it is saturated with gas. Started the bike without the air cleaner to allow more air in, and it still does the same thing. It actually shoots fire out the carb. I took it to the dealership, and they said I had to buy new pipes, a performance air cleaner, and re-jet the carb, but they would see what they could do. When I picked the bike up, the idle is higher, and the guy told be the drilled out the jets to allow more fuel to flow. This sounds crazy to me. Why would you drill out the jets, adding more fuel, when they told me in the first place it was starving for air? Any help on what to do with this is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking I should go to another dealer, what do you think?
Thanks, Steve
(I'm not sure I sent this the first time I tried. If you get 2 of them, I'm sorry!)

Answer
Hi Steve I would go to anothe dealer also. First the cough is caused by a lean condition. Not enought fuel. Idle jet shoud be a #45 it comes with a #40. I would NEVER drill out a jet. This will just confuse the next tech who would work on it. You do need new pipes. I would install a White Brothers E-Series 2 into 1 exhaust system This system will work great with your bike. More power and torque accross the entire power band, When you removed the air cleaner it leaned it out even more. It is O.K. to use the screaming Beagle Hi-Flow air filter kit.   Johnny
