Motorcycle Repair: drive chain adjustment, suzuki bandit, axil

Question
I have a 2002 Suzuki Bandit GSF600s.  I bought it in August of 2004 with no miles on it.  I now have 4000 miles on it and noticed that the drive chain was lose so I tightened it to the recommended 1 in, slack.  I followed the instructions in the owners manual and made sure the rear axil was aligned by the marks swing arms.  However, now when I ride I hear a rattleing or a rubbing type noise near the front sprocket.  I then took a closer look and it appeared to be where the drive chain was entering the casing for the front sprocket.
I was wondering what that could be and how to correct the problem.

Thanks
Jeff

Answer
HI Jeff.
Since you had the sense to get the repair manual before doing your work on the bike, I will assume that you have been lubing the chain every week and it is not dry.  So that is not the problem as far as I can see.

Put the bike up on the centerstand and, with the rear wheel raised off the ground, start the bike and let it idle in 1st gear.

Watch that area and listen for the noise.  That will show you what is making the noise and may give you ideas as to the possible solutions.

Good luck.
