Motorcycle Repair: Pulse generator location, honda goldwing aspencade, crank shaft

Question
I have an 84 Honda Goldwing Aspencade GL1200A.  My Service manual shows the pulse generator to be just above the cluch housing, and from the rear just right of the alternator.  It's not there.  Some of the photos in the manual show that location, and in some of the photos it's not.  I am assuming at this point that there may have been at least two slightly different engine designs installed in my make, year and model.  Where do you suggest I look?
The problem I am having is I am cranking, but no spark to any plugs.  I suspect its the egnition control unit, but before I buy a new one, I wanted to check everything else first.

Answer
Greg, I am really sorry I cant help you with the Goldwing as it is not my field of expertise. I lean more towards sport bikes than tourers. The pulse generator I would think should be on or at the crankshaft though. It needs to be fixed to the engine where a rotating plate with a index can pass thru it creating a signal to fire your Electronic Control Unit, the logical place would be at the end of the crank shaft, behind an engine cover...except your engine is an opposed 4 cyclinder with a longitudel crankshaft. Hmmmm. Did you try and trace the wiring back from the ECU? Maybe it will lead you to the elusive litte devil. I do know that any thing at or near the clutch cover is a real bear to even see in there. You  might have to pull off all the bags and covers and trim and lights and exhaust and fenders and well you know...just to get your head down in there and really look for it ????

let me know   I hope I was of some help
