Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Maxim 700, yamaha maxim, gas tank

Question
Chris,  I have a  1985 Yamaha Maxim 700 that sat for approximately five years.  Had gas tank treatment, carb rebuild, and tune up at the dealer.  When I got the motorcycle back it runs perfect but stalls at idle.  Most of the time it's much worse when hot.  Idle was at about 750 or so when I got it back, a friend thought it should be about 1000, I turned it up and now it runs perfect with no stalling.  Just wondering if this is O.K., idle too high, or any ideas what problem may be.    Thanks in advance, John

Answer
Hi John.
The idle is way too low.  On the Maxim series, the idle should be somewhere in the vicinity of 1100 rpm.  It may be a bit higher, so doublecheck with the repair manual.  It will have the precise settings and specs for the bike, but for inline 4's, the idlespeed tends to be somewhere between 1100 - 1400, depending on make and model.

Good luck.
