Motorcycle Repair: I have a 2002 honda elite..., honda elite, honda motorcycles

Question
I have a 2002 honda elite 80cc scooter with under 800miles on it. my speedometer stopped working and I.m having a hard time trying to get a honda dealer to take it in to fix it. Is this a simple or complex problem to get fixed? what can i do to try and fix it myself?

THANKYOU IN ADVANCE

Answer
Rich, I would ask the Honda dealer to contact the regional service rep for possible assistance(warranty), otherwise, have them check the cable to see if it isn't seated or is loose at the front wheel connection. If the cable is good, then the speedometer is defective for some reason. Pretty unusual failure, but anything is possible.

There are two cables to the front wheel... front brake and the speedometer. Be sure that the cable connection is tight for the speedo cable. You can also remove it and turn the inner cable to see if it turns freely. If so, then either the top connection of the cable to the speedometer is loose or the speedo is bad.

Getting to the speedometer will require removal of some body work, which may or may not be within your abilities, but is usually pretty straightforward in most cases.
