Motorcycle Repair: spark, suzuki 550, defective wiring

Question
I'm a fairly new rider and have collected four bikes in the last year or so. My problem is a 1984 suzuki 550 4 cyl.  It will spark 2 or 3 times at first then nothing. (and they are strong blue arcs). i have changed the coils hoping that was it,but to no avail. That is about the extent of my knowledge on spark. Also would like to say this is a great idea. Thanking you in advance ...     BIG AL                a_legacy@telus.net

Answer
Hi Al,

The electrical problem can be caused by one of the following:

1) poorly connected or defective wiring,
2) defective ignition points/condenser or pick-up coil if electronic ignition,
3) CDI/TCI if electronic ignition,
4) ignition switch,
5) engine on/off sw, saftey switches: side stand sw/clutch sw/neutral sw,
6) poorly connected ground connection somewhere.

I'll send another email with test and diagnosis information files that will assist you.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
