Motorcycle Repair: backfire, suzuki ls650 savage, air fuel mixture

Question
I recently bought a 2002 Suzuki LS650 Savage.  Generally the bike runs fine.  During shutdown with the kill switch or the key, I will get a single loed backfire just as the engine stops turning over.  Don't know if it is related, I also get an intermittent backfire if I roll off of the throttle at highway speeds.  Any advice for addressing this will be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Glenn,

This is caused by a combination of valve timing, ignition timing, and unburned hydrocarbons scavenged during the final cycles of the running engine.

Do you know if the engine, air intake, carburetion, or exhaust pipe has been changed from original?

Was the MC stored for any period of time with gasoline in the tank & carbs?

The usual fix is tuning the air-fuel mixture. Other fixes may be a tune up, worn air cut-off diaphragms on the carbs, worn/fouled spark plugs, or other ignition causes.

I would need to read the spark plugs and perform some checks before accurately diagnosing the problem.
