Motorcycle Repair: suzuki katana gsx-f750, gsx f 750, suzuki katana

Question
Hey chris,

I bought a 1990 suzuki katana GSX-F 750 and I have only been able to ride it twice. Everytime I turn the ignition on it starts up but the minute u turn the bike off it doesn't come on again...Am I flooding it? I thought it could be the spark plugs were not igniting anyway fixed that problem...then I thought it might be the fuel filter but I check the whole bike out and got it running but shortly after if i switch it off it doesn't come on again and u cannot press the start (run) button more then 3time straight it will not start? HELP PLEASEEEEE

Answer
Hi Leanne.
This is sounding a lot like an electrical problem.

Start with the contacts in the ignition switch, starter button and starter motor.  Make sure that they are good and clean.  They can be cleaned by lightly sanding them with 1000grit sandpaper till they are nice and coppery looking.

Next, check all of the connections and fuses and fuse connections.  Make sure they are clean and tight.

Lastly, go to the wiring for the starter circuit.  Look for obvious breaks and test the wires with a meter to look for shorts.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
