Motorcycle Repair: oil pump and carb (followupII), oil tank, oil pump

Question
Followup...

Mike:  I already to tried to seat the check ball in my oil pump by tapping on it on more than one occasion, and I also replaced the ball.  It will wet sump quit a bit of oil if it sits only two weeks.  My question to you is do you think I could replace this myself or should I get a professional?

Thanks,
Roland

Before you remove your oil pump try this. There is a small ball in the pump housing under a spring. This is there to keept he oil from running out of the oil tank and into the bottom end. Remove the cap and the spring. Leave the ball in. Take a punch and a hammer and tap the ball to reseat it. You dont need to hit it very hard. You might have a speck of carbon or dirt that is keeping it open. Also replace the spring. It might be weak.
Now to the carb. You can get a new needle and seat for the carb. Your problem is its leaking by. replace the needle and seat and hte o-ring and that should solve the problem.

Answer
Usually what I told you before solves the problem.
You should have no problem removing the oil pump yourself. There are 6 bolts that hold it on. Remove the oil lines. Remove the 6 bolts. The outer cover will come off. On the one gear there is a clip. Remove it and the two gears will slide off. Slide the oil pump off and remove the two inner gears. One of the inner and outer gears will be on a keyway so be careful and not lose them. One the repair has been made put is back together in reverse order. After you have it together prime the oil pump through the ball valve and hook up the lines and fire it up.
