Motorcycle Repair: leaking 83 yamaha 650, oil drain plug, yamaha 650

Question
Hey chris,
I have a 1983 yamaha 650 heritage special.  I seems like it's leaking oil near the front of the crankcase, and leaking down toward the oil drain plug.  Is this something an amatuer can fix, or should it be taken to a pro.  Any help is greatly appreicated.

Answer
Hi Charles.
It depends on exactly where the leak is and how bad.

If it is from the drain plug, itself and it is only a seepage type leak, then it may just need tightening.

If the leak is more than seepage, then it could be crossthreaded and you need to know how to rethread the hole properly.

If the leak is from the heads or the engine case, then that is a bit more complicated and if you are not real familiar with engine work, then you should defer it to an experienced professional.

Remember that the only difference between an amateur and a pro is not how much they know, but whether or not they get paid to use that knowledge.

Let me know what happens.
Good luck.
