Motorcycle Repair: Evo Starter re-build, battery problem, charging system

Question
Johnny,

I've had some issues with my starter this year.  Every now and again (generally when the bike has set for more than a few days), I'll go out to start it up and the starter doesn't engage.  It clicks (not like there's not enough charge in the battery).  It won't turn over anything.

I'm very mechanical, just haven't done this one before.

I take the starter out from the primary side, yes?  Remove the outer primary and then what?  I was told there are a couple screws holding it to the inner primary.

The main question is WHAT am I looking for when I try to re-build this starter?  Does it sound like a contact issue or brushes or what?

Any help would certainly be appreciated.  I ride with CMA in Mississippi and currently do not have the funds to take this to a shop.

Thanks,
Michael

Answer
sounds to me like a battery problem or a charging system problem. The starter comes out the right side of the bike. You have to drain the primary and remove the outer primary cover and then remove the jackshaft bolt. Go to the right side of the bike and remove the to starter bolts and then you will have the starter in your hand. as faw as rebuilding the starter you have to first know what is wrong with it. Johnny
