Motorcycle Repair: engine trouble, point gap, shively

Question
1972 Suzuki T500J Titan

Hello Mark, I have only had this bike for a month and my problem is this. When I start the bike you must keep the rpms up or it will die. It sounds great at hire rpm and the engine sounds like its flooding out when you let of the throttle. The plugs will look wet and it smokes alittle to much for a two stroke. I checked compresion on both cylinders and have 120 & 122 psi. I checked timiing and point gap. The bike also blows a lot of oil out the exhaust. I have one carb thats seeping and the mixture screw on both carbs seems to have no effect. The oil is mixed seperate thru a tank and oil pump via the throttle

Answer
Hi Marshall,

Jeez that MC is old. : )

I suspect the carburetor has some varnishing going on and will need a thorough cleaning. Ensure the spark plugs are clean and properly gapped. Check them frequently while tuning.

I recommend checking for a carb rebuild kit. If available, these kits include new gaskets, needle vale assy., air-fuel screws, jets, etc.

Look for carb kits at these website links:
