Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha FZR600 Electrical Problem, stator coil, wiring connections

Question
Hey Chris
I got an old Yamaha 1989FZR600 that has sat for just over a year. I have been able to jump start the bike with cables. I run it for about half an hour, then take it to the streets and there lies the problem. No longer than 5-10 minutes on the road the power cuts out, the electrical power that is. What do you think it is? Is there anything I can do? I checked the battery and it is definitely good so I am not sure what to do before sending it to the shop. I am a poor amateur mechanic, so any help would be appreciated Chris.
Thanks
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe.
This sounds like a short or bad connection in the wiring.  You need the repair manual to do this, so, if you haven't already, get one.

Check the wiring, fuses, fuse connections and wiring connections.  Then check the components.  Ignition coils, Battery (use a hygrometer as well as the meter) and stator coil (it should put out between 13-15 VDC at the battery terminals while running).

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
