Motorcycle Repair: Starter Ring Gear, starter clutch, tooth ring gear

Question
Is it possible to have the drain plug in the primary case installed to far in as to break a starter ring gear tooth? I had to have the starter clutch replaced(in my 97 softail)in Wy. on my way back to Ca. from Sturgis. They said they had problems getting it done becouse of retro fit parts. I think that was a line, the parts are are stock and old numbers. Anyway the next day the starter started disingageing sometimes.By the time I got home we were having to jump start it. I opened it up and found a lot of teeth missing on the ring gear and one tooth on the pinion gear (starter) broke. The maginet on the drain plug was also broken off the plug and at the bottom of the case. I would like to know if the dealer could of done something to bring this about.I'm just happy we made it home, but I would like to know what could of caused this to happen.
Thank you,

Answer
it was not the drain plug that took out the ring gear. It could of been the air/gap from the pinion gear to the ring gear. It should only be .100"    In stead of replacing the OEM 102 tooth ring gear. get a Rivera Engineering 84 tooth ring gear with pionon gear set.   Johnny
