Motorcycle Repair: tranny, honda shadow 600, engine bolts

Question
Thanks for your quick reply, Chris.
When you say lock down and repair it, do you mean tighten it up? If you over tighten, will it expand and hurt the gasket? I'm a newbie and clueless to moto. trannies. Do you know where I can find any illustrations or exploded views to help me? Once again, thanks for the timely replies and help.-------------------------

I just bought a 1995 Honda Shadow 600 (my first bike), and it has a small transmission fluid leak. What type of transmission oil or fluid would I use with my type of bike? Thanks
Answer -
Hi Russ.
Well, to start with, Japanese bikes only use engine oil in the motor because the clutch and transmission is what they call a "wet-sump" type.  This is why motorcycle oil is formulated differently from car oil.

The first thing that you need to do is lock down and repair the leak.  The use 10W40 (usually recommended) or, if you live in hotter climates, 20W50 motor oil.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi Russ.
You must tighten the parts down and/or replace the gaskets if the gaskets are bad.  If the engine bolts are all tightened correctly and the gaskets still leak, then the gaskets need to be replaced.

You need the repair manual for diagrams, instructions and specs.  It should have torqueing specs as well if you want to do it perfectly.  The gaskets will not be ruined by tightening the covers down correctly.

Good luck.
