Motorcycle Repair: fuse, phillips head screws, honda xr 75

Question
Hey Falcon,
Need some help. Actually two guys (45 years old)in the garage need some help. Without directly asking them this is what I got: Approx. 1985 (orange gas tank)Honda XR 75 (4 stroke 1 cyl). It hasn't started in years and the key is broke. Have it on a battery..machine but the yellow (iginition light?) won't come on. Found three spare fuses but where do they go? Checked by the battery. If you can help with this I am going to go in that garage and look really smart and cool. You don't mind if I keep your help a secret do you? Well for a little while anyway.
  Thanks

Answer
Hi Mary.
Well, I don't really know specifics for the old "thumpers" (4-stoke single cylinder), however; on the old Hondas the fuseboxes were normally located in one (sometimes 2) of 3 places.

There could be a small box under (not behind) the headlight assembly.  If there is, then the fusebox could be in there. It would normally be held closed by 1 or more small phillips head screws.

The fusebox could be directly under the seat as well, but it will be embossed with the word "fuses" on the top.

It could also be under one of the side covers.  Usually that location is reserved for a main fuse only (oftentimes, the fusible link type) on Hondas, with the rest of the fuses located either under the seat or under the headlight.

Ideally, you should go to a good parts shop or Honda dealership and get a repair manual.  That will have the fuse locations and sizes along with wiring diagrams and test proceedures, etc.  Study that for a little while and then go in there with your ideas.

BTW, I don't mind you not saying from where you got your info.  It does my heart good to see lady-riders that know (or are willing to learn) how to wrench and troubleshoot their own bikes.  it places you firmly into the ranks of real bikers.

Good luck.
