Motorcycle Repair: Lights dimming 84 Wing, honda gold wing, light fuse

Question
I just purchased a '84 Honda Gold Wing Interstate.  When I apply the brakes, front or rear, all the lights dim slightly (head, markers, and dash).  I took out the head light fuse, and the remaining lights still dimmed.  I jumpered the rear after-market aux lights (it was easy to do) around the key switch circuit directly to the battery.  When the brakes were applied, all the lights dimmed except the ones jumpered to the battery.  Any words of wisdom as to why?  Charging system seems fine.  Its over 12 volts at idle and nearly 14 at 3000 rpm.  By the way, the lights dim at 3000 rpm, idle, or engine off when the brakes are applied.

Answer
Hi Mark,

Sounds as if circuits are nearly overloaded. Check brake light bulbs for proper voltage rating. Previous owner may have installed higher output bulbs.

Calculate total wattage/amperage being used on brake lighting and any accessory circuits. If under maximum limit, check for corroded or poor connections.

Clean and tighten all connections including grounds. Use dielectric grease on all connectors.

Try separating and dividing accessory lighting on more than one circuit.

The jumpered auxillary lighting circuit worked normally because the voltage drop was less when jumped. It received battery voltage compared to the draw of all the other lights when connected prior.

Let me know what you find when done. My email is: mshively1@woh.rr.com
