Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Silver Wing Water Pump, rubber boots, water pumps

Question
Chris,    How are is it to replace the water pump on a 1982 Silver Wing. It has the 500 cc engine and is dripping from the rear housing. I know the engine has to come out . Is this project that difficult and should i leave the carbs intact hanging from the airbox and just remove the rubber boots from the intake.  Curtis

Answer
Hi Curtis.
To start with, water pumps are generally easy to replace.

Always refer to the repair manual for specific proceedures and specs as some pump assemblies require a gasket while most others require a gasket and a gasket sealer as well.

As far as removal of the carbs, it will be best to remove them as it will make it easier to reinstall the engine with them removed.  Just reinstall the carbs before final positioning of the engine for remounting.

Good luck.
