Motorcycle Repair: front wheel shake, 1972 honda cb350, wheel bearings

Question
Hi,I own a 1972 honda cb350 and while riding it,if I let go one hand to steer,the front wheel starts to shake and then gets worse. 2 hands off steering ,look out!speed about 35mph or faster.
Tires 10 years old,but plenty of tread,balanced by me with lead weights. No bounce at any speed.
I am open to any suggestions.
thanks dick allread

Answer
Hi Alan.
 Just because there is no discernable bounce does not mean that the tires are balanced.  They could still be off, even slightly.  However, because of the age of the bike, I am leaning more toward the possibility of it being bearings as the cause of your problems.

Do the following, to be sure;

1)  Do a high speed balance on the tires, front and rear.

2)  Check the steering head bearings.  If the steering head can be shaken about (foreward/back and/or up/down) while the wheel is off the bike replace the bearings.

3)  Check the wheel bearings in both wheels.  if the wheels cn be moved in a manner similar to what I described for the steering head, then replace the wheel bearings.

 Remember that this is a very old bike and, unless they've been changed before, so are the bearings.  So check all of them as more than one set can be bad.

Good luck.
