I just purchased a 1988 suzuki katana that doesn't run. It will turn over but it will not start. I was wondering what the problem could be? I charged the battery. I checked for spark and I have no spark. engine turns over when starter button is presses, drained old gas and put in new gas. instrument panel lights up, and no spark from plugs.

thanks

Hi Jerome,

Could be dead battery, fouled spark plugs, varnished carburetors, defective CDI, or other. It could be a combination of the above.

Have to perform several checks to know.

What's the engine doing or not doing? Does instrument lights illuminate with ignition on? Is there an arc at the spark plugs? Does engine rotate when starter button is depressed? Was the MC stored for awhile? Is the gasline old?

A tech will need to know the answer to these and more questions to diagnose the problem.

Answer
Jerome,

You'll need to use the service manual for the following test procedures. These tests may be difficult if you've never performed them or have little experience and knowledge with electrical systems.

Check electrical connectors/connections for tight, clean connection.

Check ignition pick up coil (pulsar coil) for continuity.

Check ignition coil windings for continuity.

Check coil leads and spark plug caps.

Check kill switch and ignition switch.

I suspect the CDI/TCI (black box) is defective. There's no testing other than comparing it with a known good CDI/TCI.
