Motorcycle Repair: Adjusting ratchet top tranny, shovels, shovel

Hi Mike, I'm putting my shovel back together and put a new speedo drive in my 4 speed. How do I adjust my ratchet top so it won't bang into gear when I kick it over? seems like I can get about 4 kicks out of it and it pops into gear. I've been tooling on shovels for 20 yrs and never done anything with my trannies always sent them out. Any help you might give would be greatly appreciated. It's a 1973 FL

The problem with adjusting the tranny is it sounds like it needs shimed between gears and you are running into the problem of needing a special tool to do that. The cost of the tool is to high for you to buy and use once. I would recommend pulling the tranny and have it done at a shop.
