Motorcycle Repair: stalling, honda nighthawk, water in the fuel

Question
chris,
my 84 honda nighthawk start and idles of rides for about 10-20 mins before it starts to sputter and lose power and eventually die.  I can restart it but it will just happen again this time even sooner and sooner yet if i try three times.  Eventually it wont turn over at all until the next day.  But then i have the same problem.  I bought a brand new battery and am out of ideas.  Any suggestions on the problem or how to fix it?
thanks

Answer
Hi Dave.
This sounds a lot like a problem that I had with my V65.  It had me stumped for the better part of a week.

Start by checking the float bowls for contaminant particles that will clog the fuel ports, then check the entire fuel system including the fuel tank and fuel valve for the same thing.  A cleaning or reseal of the tank may be in order.  You may also have to replace the fuel line.

Also check for water in the fuel as this can also cause the same symptoms.

Good luck.
