Motorcycle Repair: High idle, yamaha xs400, hotmail

Question
Hello Mark,

I saw that you answered a question similar to mine at some point and in your response you implied you were sending the asker some info.
My 1980 yamaha XS400 is recently purchased and I am making sure she is fit before I get her inspected.  Right now, everything starts fine, runs fine, little bit of coughing sometimes, but rest seems well enough.  Start sounds like someone is scraping thier nails on a chalk board at times, but it works.  It is after she warms up, gets hot, that the motorcycle starts to idle high.  Obviously coming down when engaged, but still high when in neutral or clutch activated.  I want to adjust the clutch, brake and throttle but am not exactly sure how to do that(shop manual is more about taking apart than fixing).  I thought that might help.  So,  what do you think the problem could be with high idle? and what steps should I take to investigate and solve?  I thought about the idle screw, but to tell the truth I don't know where it is?  I want to make this motorcycle the smoothest ride in town.

Thanks,

Andy
