Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Honda Magna 750cc, 1996 honda magna, reserve tank

Question
Chris,
My buddy has not ridden his 1996 Honda Magna in 2 years. We tried getting it started yesterday. I installed new plugs, a new battery and completely drained the gas tank and filled it with new gas. The bike will only run with the choke on. I am going to change the fuel filter and air filter today but am unable to locate the fuel filter. Can you tell me where to locate it and any other suggestions you may have as to what the problem could be...Thank you!
Scott

Answer
Hi Scott.
Those carbs need to be pulled and properly and completely cleaned.  That is the reason that the bike only runs on choke.

Also, you need to clean out the fuel pump as well as reseal both the tank and the reserve tank (under the seat).  The fuel filter, if one was installed, is under the seat as well.

Remember that the bike sat for 2 years and all that fuel that evaporated over that time left residue in the entire system.  Just replacing the fuel isn't enough.

You have residue that will contaminate the entire system again if it is not removed and/or sealed out.

Good luck.
