Motorcycle Repair: Why do the spark plugs not fire, float bowls, leak down test

Question
I have just resently purchased a 79 KZ650, The last owner had it sitting in his garage since last year, however he had it running some. I bought it a month ago and ran it up and a down my street seemed ok. I have been away for the last month. I tried to get the bike going the other day. It turned over and ran sluggishly  as if the carbs are dirty so I changed the fuel. Now the bike just turnes over. I dont seem to have any spark. I have checked the points and they have power. I have checked the wiring seems ok. There is power going to the coils but no power going to the plugs. I have checked the resistance on each coil between the powered wire and the ground wire and get the required 4 omhs. But when I check for resistance between the powered wired and plug wire on each of the coils  I get nothing. It seems funny to me that both the coils would go bad at once. Do you think there is something I am missing?

Answer
Hi Tony,

I've only seen three bad coils in my 20+ year career.

First thing to do is check gas tank for rust. If rust is present, use "Kreem" to seal the tank. Fine rust particles pass through gas filters, collect in float bowls, and obstruct jets and passage ways.

Remove and clean spark plugs.

Do a cylinder compression test. Also perform a leak-down test if compression readings are low.

Thoroughly clean and synchronize the carburetors. Last, check points and timing.

Good compression is necessary for carburetors to work properly. Good compression is essential for combustion, too.

Check and adjust valve clearances. Synchronization will be affected if clearances are off.
