Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Yamaha XJ750XN fell over.., yamaha dealership, lighting problem

Question
I bought a 85 Maxim X and it fell over fell over in a parking lot the next day.The biggest problems I have now are with my ignition housing (cracked at mounting holes),
my transmission (hard/sometimes grinding shift from 1st to 2nd, sometimes as well from 2nd to 3rd),
and my nighttime running lights don't run(taillight and signals do not glow at night).I also am having trouble finding out what my problem is with my electrical(even after I installed a new battery, the amount that I rev the engine determines how bright my light is. Even a blinking signal light lessens the power of the other lights(speedo, headlight etc.).

I am wondering if my ignition situation is directly related to my electrical problems.
This is my first bike so I don't have a clue where to start, especailly because I can't find a repair manual for the bike anywhere.
Thanks-Rob

Answer
Hi Rob.
It sounds like you have a couple of different things going on.  The cracked ignition switch could be responsible for the shorting problem, but not completely.

Start by replacing the ignition switch, then see if the lighting problem continues.  If it does, then start off by checking the fuses, fuse connections and all other connections.

As far as the grinding shift from 1st to second, if it started after the bike fell over, then it must have hit pretty hard or there is something loosened up in there.  Without knowing if it is coming from the transmission or shifter, you may want a mechanic to see it firsthand.

As far as the repair manual, they can be found online at:

www.repairmanuals.com

www.jcwhitney.com

www.denniskirk.com

or you should be able to order them through the local Yamaha dealership or any decent motorcycle parts/accessory shop.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
