I have an '84 Ironhead Sportster w/Super 'E' carb. The jets are a .265 intermediate & .066 main Jet. After about 100 miles the bike starts to miss. I pull the plugs & find dry black soot. I replace plugs, runs fine. Do I have a 'jet' problem? If so, where do you suggest I start as a fix? Also, the gas milage stinks. Could it be a timing problem? I have a DYNA 2000 ignition set at between 45 & 50 deg. Thanks so much for any info...

Did you just install the carb, or has it been on for a while?
Mike

I just purchased this bike. The S&S was on it at that time. Also, it had been converted over to a points set up. I converted it back to electronic ignition. Thanks...

Answer
Sounds like your carb is not jetted right.
Put in a new set of plugs, start the bike and let it warm up.
Looking at the top of the carb you will see a large screw. This is your air/fuel mixture screw. Slowly turn it inward just until the bike starts the stumble. Now turn it out a 1/4 of a turn. Locate the pumper screw. it is to the right of the air/fuel mixture screw. Turn it in all the way. This shuts off the pump.
Now go for a ride. Go about 5 miles. Do not rev high and do not go over 40 MPH. When you get back pull the plugs. If they sre sooty then you need a smaller intermediate jet.
If that is ok, now go for another ride, about the same distance. Go around 60 MPH or above. When you get back, pull the plugs. If they are sooty then you need a smaller main jet.
Anytime you change jets always adjust the the air/fuel mixture screw.
Once you have it set, open the pumper screw back up around one turn. Now go riding. If when you get on it the bike stumbles then you need to open the pumper screw more. Usually open it about a 1/2 a turn at a time. Keep doing thins until the bike quits stumbling.
You should be set
Good luck and happy riding
