Question -
Will my bike run if the stator is bad, can it just run on the battery and for how far,do thay get weak before thay go and how do you test it. Ps whear is it is it a repare I can do myslef
Answer -
Hi Joe.
To answer your question, yes it will run on just the battery, but not for too long.  Maybe 1/2 hour to 45 minutes; And that is if you disconnect power to headlights, taillights, turn signals, and marker lights.  Not recommended except in emergencies.

As far as the location, if you look at your engine, left side, you will see a circular section on the engine.  On most bikes, the stator is on that side, under that part of the cover.  It is a repair that you can do yourself.  I have done many.  But in your case, I would get the repair manual to be sure that you get everything correct for the replacement.  You will also find that there are many other things on the bike that you can do yourself that you may not have thought of.

Good luck.

Hi Joe.
To test the stator, put the bike up on the centerstand and start it up.

Then check the voltage across the battery leads.  If the voltage is dropping, the stator is completely gone.  If the voltage is below 13 VDC, then the stator is going or gone.  The voltage should be between 13 - 15 VDC for the stator to be good.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi Joe.
The fact that the battery was dry means that it was not properly maintained.  You have at least on bad cel, so it won't hold a charge anyway.  With a full charge, the battery should be at 12 volts.  Nothing less.  Bad cel is indicated in your case.

The fact that the voltage did not change while you ran the bike, and it drained the battery, indicates that the stator is in fact bad.  Replace both the battery and stator and take bettr care of the battery.  Check it once a week and when you put fluid in the battery, make sure that it is distilled water only.

Good luck.
