Motorcycle Repair: Vespa ET2 50cc 2 cycle engine, service intervals, fuel filter

Question
I can get engine started but when giving gas it is sluggish or quits. I pulled and cleaned spark plug ... no help. Could it be fuel filter? Could it be clogged air intake? Any advise you can supply will be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Terry.
Does the bike set up in storage over the winter?  If so, then the problem is that the carb needs cleaning.

If not, then you could have the idle set just slightly too low or you could have a problem with a clogged air filter.  When was the last time you changed it?  Is it due or overdue?  Usually the air filters need replacement about every 6 months or 2000 miles.  That is an approximate.  Your owner's manual and the repair manual will give the actual service intervals.

If your carb has an accessable mixture screw (this is another knob, in addition to the idle screw), then the mixture could be too rich.

Check those and see what you get.

Good luck.
