Motorcycle Repair: electrical/charging, stator coil, yamaha virago

Question
Dear, Chris. I have a 1990 Yamaha Virago 1100cc. The problem is the battery keeps going flat after every 100 miles or so. have replaced rectifier, battery. the continuity on the stator wires seems ok, but still can only get about 12 volts across the battery when running, also seems to turn over a little slow even when the battery is fully charged. (startor also replaced) Do you think this could be a battery cable problem? I would be grateful for any input. Thanks

Answer
Hi Gary.
The XV is a great bike but it's biggest problem is the starter motor, not the regulator/rectifier.  I have never heard of a reg/rec going bad at all on them.  The stator coil is almost always the problem when the battery fails to charge.  Start the bike and see what the voltage is across the battery terminals.  If it is less than 13 volts DC, then replace the stator coil.

Good luck.
