Motorcycle Repair: electrical problem (Kawasaki kz440 LTD), kawasaki kz440, regulator rectifier

Question
I have a 1980 Kawasaki kz440LTD. It will run until the battery runs down or is unhooked. What could the problem be? I noticed that the turn signals or the break light does not work but, the head light and dash lights do. I don't know if thats a different problem or part of the problem with the battery not charging. any help will be appreciated! I don't know about any past repairs made on the bike. It was just given to me, all I was told is that it dosn't run.

Answer
Hi John,

An output test needs to be performed to determine the condition of the charging system. The regulator/rectifier would be tested next. I'll try and send test files to your email address. Hotmail sometimes will not take my files.

The lighting problem may be a fuse, bulbs, poor ground, or wiring.  We'll work on that next.
