Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki Intruder Clutch Replacement, barnett clutch, clutch replacement

Question
Mark

How difficult and do you have any recommended tips before I take a stab at replacing the clutch on my 1996 Intruder VS1400GLPT? Will I need to purchase a repair manual or need any special tools to do clutch replacement? I have reasonable expertise working on cars and motorcycles, but I've not done a wet clutch replacement on a bike.

Do you recommend any particular clutch assembly manufacturer for replacement parts? I've seen a large range in pricing in catalogs and it's not obvious why. I'm not sure I want to go with OEM, since this clutch is slipping at only 13,000 miles and it's not like I dump the clutch routinely (never had this problem on other motorcycles or cars and I am the original owner of this one so know its history). I've always used OEM oil, and changed it - which doesn't stop the slipping.

One last item - I believe my engine overheated (creeping along in a long line of bikes at Laconia in the hot sun) last month, which caused my brake fluid to boil (I flushed/replaced the clutch fluid and changed the engine oil to recover). Is it possible that the engine overheating could have damaged the clutch plates, since the slipping has gotten significantly worse since that event?

Answer
Hi Bob,

Get the service manual and review the task before performing the work. Suzuki makes special holders (even non-factory holders are sold). Many techs use air impact tools only to remove nuts that hold clutch basket assy to shaft.

I recommend Barnett Clutch plates and springs. It's best to replace metal plates, fiber plates, and springs as a set.

I do not recommend OEM oils. They lack SAE & ASI seals and is purchased from major oil companies and labeled Suzuki, etc... I recommend premium name brand oils with the SAE & ASI seals.

Overheated engine and oil should not harm the plates. Slipping the clutch exceeds temps of an overheated engine. Slipping clutch burns (warps) clutch plates.
