Motorcycle Repair: 82 honda nighthawk 750, honda nighthawk 750, regulator rectifier

Question
I have a '82 honda nighthawk 750 that seems to have  a charging problem. the bike has 11000 km on it and is used very rarely.
it appears that the battery is unable to gain enough charge to allow the bike to run. with a new battery, it will run fine for several hours. then the electrical system seems to fail and the lights dim, the horn fails to work and the bike just stops.
after a charge, its ready to go again.
honda has checked the bike 3 time.
new regulator-rectifier has been installed.
new battery installed.
stator apparently checks out.
any suggestions?
thanks.

Answer
Hi Greg.
Clearly those 'mechanics' at the dealership are just parts-changers.
You should ask them if they went looking for any shorts in the charging system (chances are they didn't, no matter what they say).  Anywhere that the wiring could have been grounding out, broken wires, bad or dirty connections.

There could even be a short in the main wiring that is bleeding off your power preventing the battery from charging properly.

Take the bike to an honest independant shop and see what they say.  Tell them what the guys at the dealership told you and see what they say.

Good luck.
