Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Gold Wing, Oil Light, honda repair, independant shop

Question
Falcon:

I emailed you about a week ago with an oil light problem. To remind you of my problem. I have a 1982 Gold Wing Interstate. I was letting my bike run to check the voltage when I heard a click and the oil light came on. I changed the oil and filter and started the motorcycle. I could see oil flowing through the sight glass, but the oil light was still on. You said it sounded like a dirty or faulty oil level sensor. I changed the sensor and the light is still on. To see if the oil pump was working, I took off the right side valve cover and started the engine. At idle I could see oil seeping out from the ends of the shafts that the rocker arm attach to. When I reved the engine a bit, I could see oil seeping from the bottom area of the valve springs. Is this normal? What's my next step? No one at any of our Honda repair shops want to work on a bike that old, nor is anyone willing to give any advise. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Tom.
Having changed the sensor and the light is still on, then there is a problem in the wiring.  Somewhere it is shorting against power and energising the light.  Go over the wiring very carefully.  Make sure that you have the repair manual as it will have the wiring diagrams.

For the oil, yes, some oil will do that so that the rocker arms are lubed up.  If it exit's the rocker arm covers and drips on the ground, then you need to replace the gasket.

You may want to look around for an independant shop since the dealerships refuse to work on older bikes, the independants will.

Good luck.
