Motorcycle Repair: Bandit 600 stalls, long term storage, bandit 600

Question
Hi Chris,

I have a 2001 bandit 600. It usually takes a while to warm up so I keep the choke on for around 15 minutes. Yesterday while riding on the highway I turned down the choke and the engine died on me. I couldn't get it to start for a few minutes and then only in full choke. The RPM in full choke bounced to around 4k (usually it's between 2-3k and lower when warm). Whenever I try to turn down the choke the engine stalls. At 1st gear in low revs (stop light) if I turn the throttle too quickly the bike stalls. I need to rev it up before letting go of the clutch. It feels like when riding the bike coughs a little but I'm not sure. It seems to me that there is a fuel block somewhere but what makes me unsure is that on one of my stops (stalls) when I turned the key and pressed the strarter, the electric system was acting funny ( I had to move the bike a little for the electric system to come on). Maybe that's a different issue. I wanted to get your opinion before I take the bike apart. Do you think it's a fuel block somewhere or can it be electrical?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Assaf.
Has the bike spent time in seasonal or any other long-term storage?  If it does, then start with a thorough cleaning of the fuel system and carbs.

What doe the spark plugs look like?  Are they fouled?

How about the air filter?  Is it due or overdue for replacement?

You should check the ignition system for shorts or failing components.  Refer to the repair manual for wiring diagrams and component test specs.

Start there and see what you find.
Good luck.
