Motorcycle Repair: Electrical Problem - CB550SC Honda Nighthawk, bike bandit, honda 550

Question
Hello,

I am having a problem with my Honda 550 Nighthawk. The battery does not seem to be charging. I have noticed lately the last few times I have been riding that my lights were not as bright as normal, but bike was starting fine. I rode to work and back all week and last night on the way home after dark the lights were dim when I slowed for turns but seemed to brighten a bit as I got up to speed. I started the bike today to go to work but it didn't turn over as well. When I came home at lunch I shut it off and now it turned over once and is now dead. It is important to note that the battery is only 4 months old and the bike is ridden a few times a week, the bike only has 5000 original miles and was stored for awhile before I got it in Feb. of this year. Other than a complete tuneup and tires the bike has been great.
Basically, what can I do to make sure it is the generator? I just checked on how much a new one is at bikebandit.com and it is not a cheap fix. Also, if it is the generator, do I just replace the stator? or the whole thing? The stator will hit me for about $300 new.

Thanks for any help or info!
Eric

P.S.
Any good places to buy used honda parts online?

Answer
Hi Eric,

Perform an output test with a multimeter at the battery to determine the condition of the charging system. Then, if necessary test individual circuit components to diagnose cause.

New batteries can be defective or not properly serviced before put into service.

Just have to search about for best prices. I do same everytime I have to buy parts. Bike Bandit has competitive retail prices.

Send me an email address as requested if you want my test files.
