Motorcycle Repair: bad missfire, kawasaki zx 9r, explorer search

Question
Right here we go, the bike is a 1999 kawasaki ZX-9R model C2.It has done 12000 miles.

The problem is when in 3rd gear the bike missfires really badly when pulling away from 30 to 40 mph, like when you just want to overtake a slow moving car or accelerating out of a corner.
it has been surgessted to me that it might be a sensor in the gearbox that tells the ecu what gear the bike is in for the ignition timing, which sounds right to me as the problem only occurs in 3rd gear.
If this sounds right to you would you have any more information about how to cure this problem?
I await you reply with great anticipation.

Answer
Hi Dave,

I agree with you guys.

However, without performing diagnosis checks, I couldn't be absolutely certain. (Reputaion saver in case its not the problem) : )

Try ZX-9R message boards. To find them, do a Internet Explorer search. There's many of them.

Keep me advised of what you find.
